Obscura Labs is an independent organization registered in Nigeria with a strategic focus on Africa and other emerging markets.
Its mission is to build infrastructure, tools, and practical adoption pathways that improve the accessibility, utility, decentralization, and long-term resilience of the Zcash ecosystem across Africa.
The organization aims to support the use of privacy-preserving financial technology by improving access to reliable infrastructure, supporting developers and businesses, educating users, and strengthening local Zcash communities.
Obscura Labs was founded by Chidi Olisa, the lead of Zcash Nigeria.
Before establishing Obscura Labs, Chidi contributed to the Zcash ecosystem through community building, education, advocacy, localized content creation, user support, and initiatives designed to introduce people in Nigeria and other parts of Africa to financial privacy and Zcash.
Engagement with users, students, developers, businesses, and community members highlighted several barriers to broader Zcash adoption across Africa. These included limited infrastructure, difficulty accessing ZEC through local currencies, insufficient developer support, a shortage of localized educational resources, and limited integration with everyday payment systems.
Obscura Labs was created in response to these challenges.
The organization is based on the view that awareness alone is not sufficient for sustainable adoption. Communities also require reliable infrastructure, accessible products, developer tools, financial access, education, and long-term institutional support.
Obscura Labs vision is to help make Africa one of the strongest regions for Zcash infrastructure, adoption, and ecosystem growth.
The organization aspires to become a leading African contributor to the Zcash ecosystem by:
Obscura Labs initially plans to focus its work across four strategic areas.
Reliable infrastructure is necessary for wallets, applications, developers, exchanges, payment services, and users to interact with the Zcash network.
Obscura Labs operates and develops Zcash infrastructure within Africa to improve network accessibility, geographic diversity, reliability, and resilience. This work is intended to reduce reliance on a small number of infrastructure operators and provide dependable services for users and developers in African markets.
Infrastructure initiatives may include:
By making infrastructure more accessible, Obscura Labs aims to support developers, wallets, applications, businesses, and services integrating with the Zcash ecosystem.
For Zcash to be useful in everyday situations, people must be able to acquire, store, use, and exchange ZEC without unnecessary friction.
Obscura Labs supports initiatives intended to improve:
Particular attention is given to services that address challenges commonly experienced in African markets, including currency instability, financial exclusion, expensive cross-border transfers, limited access to global payment systems, and increasing financial surveillance.
Obscura Labs supports the development of sustainable Zcash communities throughout Africa.
Its community initiatives may include:
The organizations objective is not limited to increasing general awareness. It also seeks to help communities develop the knowledge and resources needed to educate users, support local adoption, train developers, and produce future advocates and ecosystem contributors.
Obscura Labs works with organizations, developers, educators, researchers, businesses, infrastructure operators, and community leaders throughout the Zcash ecosystem.
This collaboration is intended to support initiatives that:
Obscura Labs operates independently while working toward shared objectives with other Zcash ecosystem participants.
Although Obscura Labs is in an early stage of development, several initiatives have already begun.
Obscura Labs operates DNS seeder infrastructure from Africa.
DNS seeders help new Zcash nodes discover peers when connecting to the network. Increasing the geographic distribution of seeders contributes to the decentralization and resilience of the Zcash peer-to-peer network.
The organization operates Zebra nodes within Africa.
Zebra is an independent implementation of the Zcash consensus protocol. Operating Zebra infrastructure contributes to network accessibility, implementation diversity, and the geographic distribution of Zcash nodes.
Obscura Labs operates lightwalletd infrastructure to support Zcash wallet connectivity.
lightwalletd provides blockchain data to light-client wallets without requiring each wallet user to operate a complete Zcash node. Reliable lightwalletd services are therefore important for mobile wallets and other lightweight Zcash applications.
Obscura Labs is developing public monitoring and status systems for its infrastructure.
These systems are intended to improve operational transparency by allowing users and developers to check the availability and status of publicly accessible services.
ZecFiat is an Obscura Labs initiative focused on improving access between ZEC and African local currencies.
The project is intended to reduce barriers for individuals and businesses seeking to acquire, use, or exchange ZEC. Its broader objective is to make Zcash more practical within markets where access to cryptocurrency services and international financial systems may be limited.
Further information about ZecFiat’s structure, supported markets, availability, and operating model is expected as the initiative develops.
Obscura Labs was founded by Chidi Olisa, who also leads the Zcash Nigeria community and Gentle Fox is an infrastructure engineer and contributor at Obscura Labs, supporting the deployment, maintenance, and reliability of the organization's infrastructure and services.
The organization is currently in its early development stage. As it grows, Obscura Labs intends to establish a small team of part-time contributors with experience in areas including:
Obscura Labs is also engaging experienced professionals, industry experts, and Zcash ecosystem contributors who may provide strategic guidance or serve as advisors and board members.
Obscura Labs is an independent organization registered in Nigeria.
The organization is being developed with a focus on establishing the governance, expertise, and operational capacity required to support sustainable growth and long-term contributions to the Zcash ecosystem.
Its planned organizational structure may include:
Additional information regarding its governance structure, legal status, board membership, and organizational policies may be published as the organization develops.
At launch, Obscura Labs is expected to be funded primarily through:
Initial funding will be used to support infrastructure operations, product development, community initiatives, organizational expenses, and the recruitment of contributors.
Over time, Obscura Labs intends to develop a sustainable funding model that allows it to consistently deliver measurable value to the Zcash ecosystem while maintaining its independence.
Obscura Labs is part of a growing group of independent organizations contributing to Zcash through infrastructure, software development, education, community support, and adoption initiatives.
Its work is intended to increase geographic and organizational diversity within the ecosystem by establishing additional Zcash infrastructure and development capacity in Africa.
The organization’s activities contribute to several broader ecosystem objectives:
